Free WiFi in Dublin and Win A Nexus 7 Tablet

Tomorrow the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Naoise Ó Muirí will launch Dublin Free WiFi.

This new service will offer both Dubliners and visitors to the city access to free WiFi, 24/7, at key locations around the city.

In a nice quirk the WiFi signs will be Dublin characters both modern and historic with a Viking, a street cleaner, a tourist, a rockabilly girl and pyjama girl being visible on 31st January. ”

To mark the launch everyone is invited to take part in a Twitter WiFi Day from 11am to 5pm, at Barnardo’s Square. Anyone sending one tweet (using#DublinGowexFreeWifi) will be entitled to one day of free Premium WiFi (speed up to 6Mbps). Those registering as a user of the Dublin WiFi network on launch day, up to midnight, will be in with a chance of winning a Nexus 7 Tablet.

Free WiFi is an initiative of Dublin City Council. It is provided, at no cost to the Council , by Gowex, a Spanish company that has provided similar services globally.

The service is free and provides a download speed of 512Kbps and an upload speed of 128Kbps. Users also have the option to purchase a higher download speed of up to 6 Mbps if required. Once registered the user will have access to all Dublin city hotspots and other Gowex networks in cities like Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Malaga, Paris, New York, San Francisco, Argentina and Dubai.

From Thursday the service will be available at the Civic Offices Amphitheatre, Wood Quay, St Patrick’s Park and Barnardo’s Square. The service will be rolled out over the coming weeks to other key city centre locations including Smithfield Square, Grafton Street, Henry Street, O’Connell Street and Temple Bar Square.

You can view the full set of “digidub” characters and find out where you can go digital at www.dublingowexfreewifi.ie

Future of 1916 Moore Street Buildings

Have your say on future of

1916 Moore Street Buildings

Dublin City Council have recently set up a Moore Street Advisory Committee to review, report on, and make recommendations to the City Council regarding the development of the Moore Street area.

The Committee will focus on the preservation, use and development of the 1916 GPO Evacuation Route and the Moore Street buildings occupied by the rebels in the final day of the 1916 Easter Rising.

To assist the Committee in making their final recommendations on this historic site, the public, be it a group or individual, are invited to make suggestions to the Committee on this matter.

Submissions can be sent to msac@dublincity.ie by Thursday, 31st January, 2013 or posted to The Chairman, Moore Street Advisory Committee, City Manager’s Department, Civic Offices, Wood Quay, Dublin 8.

According to Cllr. Nial Ring, chairperson of the committee "The review process will be hugely influenced by what the people want to see on Moore Street, and we hope that all interested parties will show commitment to the sensitive development of the area by engaging with our committee. By agreeing to set up this committee, Dublin City Councillors have shown their commitment to ensuring that the historical significance of Moore Street is protected, preserved and celebrated"

History is alive in these houses and stores. Have your say in what their future holds.

Update from DLRCC on Sandyford Congestion

Dun Laoghaire Rathdown have been busy, and have finally come up with some solutions to ease the pain of the many people who have been affected by recent changes made to the roads in Sandyford Industrial Estate.

Here is a press release they issued today outlining the improvements they are going to make.

Following a comprehensive review, including engagement with the Sandyford Business District

Association (SBDA), measures are being undertaken immediately by the County Council in an initiative to reduce evening travel times.

· The build out and pedestrian crossing at the junction of Blackthorn Road and Blackthorn Avenue will be pulled back and this junction widened to accommodate two lanes of traffic.

· While Blackthorn Road will remain two-way, a second lane will be introduced on the approach to Blackthorn Avenue to increase traffic flows. The Road will then have three lanes in total (allowing for 2 lanes exiting Blackthorn Road and 1 lane entering).

· The lane adjustments will be achieved mainly through the alteration of road markings (also involving the removal of current cycle track markings). New off road cycle tracks will be delivered soon.

· These measures will take a maximum of ten days (weather permitting) to be completed. They are being implemented as a priority and works have already commenced.

· The County Council will continue to monitor traffic flows in the area following the introduction of these measures.

It's good to see they have been looking at the situation. Hopefully these changes will allow people to get off Carmenhall Rd quicker and thus loosen things up and get things moving again.
