National Slow Down Day

An Garda Síochána will conduct an intensive national speed enforcement operation for a 24 hour period from 7am tomorrow until 7am on Saturday.
During the day, Gardaí will be engaging in a number of high visibility speed enforcement activities to remind drivers of the dangers of speeding, including use of laser handheld speed detection devices, Garda speed vans, and in-car speed detection systems.
GoSafe vehicles will also be deployed on the day in speed enforcement zones where serious and fatal injury collisions have occurred. (All 727 speed enforcement zones are available on the Garda website).
The objective of operation “Slow Down” is to reduce the number of speed related collisions, save lives and reduce injuries on our roads.  The aim is to remind drivers of the dangers of speeding, increase compliance with speed limits and act as a deterrent to driving at excessive and inappropriate speed.
GoSafe vehicles will also be deployed on the day in speed enforcement zones where serious and fatal injury collisions have occurred. (All 727 speed enforcement zones are available on the Garda website).
Last year saw another increase in road deaths, resulting in 195 fatalities. Excessive or inappropriate speed is a major contributory factor to road traffic collisions.  The higher the speed, the greater the likelihood is of a collision happening and the more severe the outcome of that collision. As a general rule a 1% reduction in average speed will bring about a 2% reduction in minor injury collisions, a 3% reduction in serious injury collisions and a 4% reduction in fatal collisions. This is why reducing motorists’ speed is essential to improving road safety.
Here are some statistics to consider.
• 91% of detections were more than 10km/h over the speed limit.
• 9% of detections were made between 1 – 9 km/h above the posted speed limit
• 80% were made between 10 and 29 km/h above the posted speed limit
• 11%  of detections were for speeds in excess of 30 km/h above the limit
• 50km/ zones worst for speeding offences, nearly half of all speeding offences in this zone.
To date 106 people have been killed on Irish roads, 21 fewer than this date in 2014.
108,971 speeding fixed charge notices have been issued, as of 30th June 2015

New 'CrowdAlert' Traffic App

A lot of our listeners have got onto us recently and asked about the possibility of using Smartphone apps to help in dealing with traffic. Well, we've got some news on that front.

Dublin City Council are taking part in the EU funded INSIGHT project, part of which aims to develop a smartphone app 'Crowd Alert' that allows users to give feedback on traffic incidents taking place in their area, and verify details for DCC's Traffic controllers, enabling those in the Traffic Management Centre to respond quicker when collisions and other incidents happen around the city.

The app is now in the beta-testing phase, and DCC are looking for members of the public with Android phones to download the app and test it out. They're looking for users to experiment with the features of the app and report events (even fake ones) to test how well the app handles it.

To download the app and find out more information on how it works. Search for 'CrowdAlert' on Google Store (or follow this link):  https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=gr.aueb.boutsis.crowdalert.app

Ironman 70.3 Road Closures Sunday August 9th

IRONMAN 70.3 Dublin is hitting the streets of Dublin this Sunday morning. This insanely grueling event is going to make it's way from Blackrock to the Phoenix Park and off out to Meath.

This will require a number of road courses. The biggest of which while be the North quays closing, thus stopping any traffic from crossing the liffey from 7.00 to 10.45.

FULL MAP OF ROUTE HERE

Here's a full list of the closures and their times, but to be honest the link to the map has all the info you need.

DUBLIN CITY 7AM - 10:30AM

The bike course will travel north from Dun Laoghaire, skirting Dublin Bay, over the Eastlink Bridge and head through the city on the North Quays, before entering Phoenix Park.

NOTE: There will be no vehicle crossing of the Liffey through Dublin City during the above times. Vehicles requiring access to the north or south of the city should use M50 to the most suitable alternative route.

DUBLIN NORTH
All bridges across the Lifey River in Dublin City between the East Link Toll Bridge and the Frank Sherwin Bridge will be closed on Sunday 9th August between 7am and 10:15am. Access across the bridges during the time will be for emergency service vehicles only. If you wish to travel South during the closure time you will need to take the M50 which will be open at all stages throughout the day. If your travel plans take you, West of Dublin on the day please be aware of other closures across Fingal, Meath and Kildare.

DUBLIN SOUTH
All bridges across the Lifey River in Dublin City between the East Link Toll Bridge and the Frank Sherwin Bridge will be closed on Sunday 9th August between 7am and 10:15am. Access across the bridges during the time will be for emergency service vehicles only. If you wish to travel North during the closure time you will need to take the M50 which will be open at all stages throughout the day. If your travel plans take you, West of Dublin on the day please be aware of other closures across Fingal, Meath and Kildare.

For information on local areas please refer to the guide below:

Coming from Dublin City Centre, Phoenix park, Luttrellstown Road and passing Westmanstown Complex the bike course takes a right off the R121 and another right and over Collins Bridge onto the R149 continuing along Barnhill Road and then left off the R149 onto L2222 heading into Dunboyne, passing Dunboyne Athletic Club on Rooske Road turning left on to Main Street / Station Road. The Course continues through Dunboyne onto Summerhill Road, straight through the Roundabout and onto the R156. This section of the R149 / L2222 / Rooske Road will be fully closed to traffic between 8am – 12noon.
