Can you name that bridge?

Yes you can!

We spoke about this on the show before, but it really is a great opportunity to have your say in naming a new bridge.

A new bridge is currently being built across the Liffey between Marlborough Street and Hawkins Street. Dublin City Council has recently set up a Commemorative Naming Committee who will consider proposals to honour, celebrate, or remember a person, group of people or events of significance that have helped to shape the City of Dublin.

The Committee are now looking for your help in putting forward suggestions for the naming of the new bridge. This opportunity to assist the Committee in making their final recommendation is open to all members of the public, be it a group or individual.

Application Forms and criteria are available from the Culture, Recreation and Amenity Department of Dublin City Council or can be downloaded in both Irish and English.

Completed application forms can be sent to Commemorative Naming Committee, C/O Culture, Recreation and Amenity Department, Civic Offices, Wood Quay, Dublin 8 or e-mailed directly to cra@dublincity.ie

The closing date for submissions is Friday 19th April, 2013 at 5.00 p.m.

It's current name is, The Marlborough Street Public Transport Priority Bridge. We can do better!

Producer John always like to point out that no bridge on the Liffey in Dublin City is named after a woman.

Open Air Cinema Festival

This is such a great idea! If you have never had the chance to watch a movie outdoors you now have the opportunity.

Ireland’s first Instant Open Air Cinema Festival will screen, in no particular order and with a mere

36 hours notice, four iconic films over a three week period in the ultimate urban park Fitzwilliam

Square. This is the latest installment by cultural events crew Happening’s who are introducing a

new instant outdoor culture into our city to inspire action, spontaneity and to defy our unpredictable

weather.


The concept is simple. From April 19th the Happening’s team will be glued to met.ie and their

Accuweather apps picking the best weather days before they pick us. As soon as they score on the

weather front they will literally ‘pop up’ the cinema screen and get posting the details on Facebook

and Twitter. Then it’s up to the digital natives to grab the picnic blankets and get the gang together.


The Instant Open Air Cinema Festival is also part of 'Fiver Flicks', another hugely successful

Happening’s initiative screening films in various indoor and outdoor venues around the country,

charging just €5 in. This festival will allow cinema lovers to have a whole new movie experience

immersed in the natural tranquility of this treasure of a city park at a recession friendly price.


At the Fitzwilliam Square festival there will be lots of great food and warm beverages provided by

Irish village Food Markets, so people can come early and grab a bite before stealing their patch in the

park. And in keeping with their ethos of social and environmental responsibility, Happening’s events

operate a strict 'leave no trace' policy so expect to be politely asked on arrival to remember to take

everything home in the complimentary bin bag provided which also serves as a makeshift yet useful

seat and kindly keeps your bottom dry.

Old Navan Rd Works

A one way system will be in place westbound on the Old Navan Rd (outbound) between Liberty Insurance and the N3 overpass, from Monday the 8th of April to Friday May 31st.

This will affect anyone who comes off the N3 at Junction 2, Blanchardstown iot will also affect anyone who normally travels eastbound past the Liberty Insurance building/Ebay to get to the N3. people who also access Blanchardstown Shopping center from Blanchardstown Rd will also have to divert.

Diversions:

For inbound traffic from Blanchardstown Road North heading towards Blanchardstown
Village the alternative route available is via Blanchardstown Road South, Snugborough
Road Extension, Old Navan Road (Part Of) or via slip road to N3.

Dublin City Council has launched details of the Parnell Square Cultural Quarter - a new Cultural District for Dublin City

New City Library to form centrepiece of Parnell Square Cultural Quarter development.

Kennedy Wilson, acting on a philanthropic basis, to provide seed capital of € 2.5M and to lead remainder of fundraising.

Lord Mayor calls for public participation in Parnell Square Cultural Quarter planning process / discussion.

Dublin City Manager John Tierney said: ‘’ this project represents a powerful opportunity and catalyst for the redevelopment of this part of Northside Dublin. Dublin City Council is looking forward to working in partnership with Kennedy Wilson and with all the other stakeholders in bringing this major project to fruition.’’

Peter Collins, managing director, Kennedy Wilson Europe said: “Parnell Square has a long association with philanthropy; the Rotunda Maternity Hospital, Britain and Ireland’s first public maternity hospital, built by Dr. Bartholomew Mosse in the 18th century was financed by private donations. Kennedy Wilson is proud to continue this philanthropic heritage through our involvement with this visionary development for Dublin city. As a company we are committed to supporting public projects in the cities in which we are based, that will have a genuine positive impact on the residents of those cities. Dublin City Architect, Ali Grehan said: “The Parnell Square Cultural Quarter will be at the heart of the cultural life of the capital, connecting and consolidating the Civic Spine which is a cornerstone of city development policy.

The Parnell Square Cultural Quarter project will see the development of a new city library on the site of Colaiste Mhuire, the re-development of the former Colaiste Mhuire buildings to form the entrance to the new City library and the provision of public rooms for a variety of cultural uses - from music, media, craft and design. 20-21 Parnell Square will also form part of the cultural complex and a pedestrian plaza at the north end of Parnell Square will create new public events space in front of the cultural buildings.

The public is being encouraged to participate in the consultation process around the Parnell Square Cultural Quarter. A series of public meetings and workshops are being planned to help develop a shared understanding of the expectations and needs of all stakeholders; from individuals, community groups, and public representatives to cultural promoters, educational institutions and businesses. These meetings will take place in tandem with the commissioning of the design and will inform the final design brief.
